Keep making excuses instead of reading the facts. There are cataclysmic events all throughout the history of the earth which is billions of years old. I am sure your right though and nothing is every going to happen again. Do you even realize how ignorant you sound?

Colonizing other planets is our only chance of survival. If you studied the history of the earth you would realize that not only is it incredibly unstable and every 15000, 20000 years or so some big "catastraphic" event happens that changes life on earth. If our current "society", our history, our beliefs, if we want those to survive we have to colonize other planets. The course of human history, culture, and technology have been reset more then once.

We now know that the great flood in over 80 cultures around the world actually happened. The sea level would of rose and completely destroyed the most advanced civilizations since their cities would be on the coast just like ours. just like if the sea level was to rise just 10 feet now we would loose most major cities, and we are talking about a lot larger rise then 10ft. The only people who would of survived that event where the nomadic "less advanced" people wandering the places more inland. Just like today if the sea level was to rise 50 feet, most large cities would be wiped out and most people who depends on modern amenities would probably not be able to survive on their own. Leaving a few survivalist type people left, the only other people who would be alive on this earth would be the tribal people who live in the inland parts of Africa and other people who have learned to actually survive off the land instead of living off society. Our entire way of life can be reset in a flash, and we now know it has happened before. That is the reason to colonize other planets.

Won't get longer than the van Allen belt, maybe in his fantasy he will journey to mars.
