What's a canary post? I don't get exactly what you are implying

Ciscogeek

A regularly scheduled notice saying they have not received a NSL. The NSL says you can't disclose you've received it or talk about it. Therefore by not announcing a lack of receipt, it can be inferred the party had received one. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrant_canary

Why in God's name did VOAT incorporate in the United States?

Because believe it or not we have some of the best laws when it comes to things like free speech.

Now, whether or not those laws are upheld is another story, but compared to places like Germany or Sweden, America is pretty lax. The only thing he's really giving up by incorporating in the US is privacy, which is an issue in any country that allies with America.

He could have incorporated in some bullshit country like Somalia but they have their own problems.

it might not have been the best choice, but it certainly wasn't the worst.

The problem here is that national security letters circumvent First Amendment protections. So you can argue about how the US has the strong free speech protections constitutionally - stronger than in most EU democracies - but those defacto protections are no longer relevant in a land where the constitution is secretly circumvented and ignored for national security reasons.

This is not Daniel Ellesberg's Pentagon Papers moment. This is not the same Supreme Court that decided NY Times v. United States. Given that congressional leaders openly debated jailing Glenn Greenwald for releasing news stories about Edward Snowden leaks, and did charge and jail many leakers under the 1917 Espionage Act, and did engage in wholesale electronic surveillance of Associated Press offices to determine the identity of a source in a leak, do not think for a minute they won't do the same here on US soil or anywhere else.

They have gone rogue. Your legal protections are moot.

Are you serious? Can someone legally incorporate in Somalia? That'd be awesome. What is the best country to incorporate in for privacy and free speech?

dabork

As far as I know, yes. Most people incorporate in little places like Belize or the British Virgin Islands because of low taxes and regulations.

If you're looking for privacy, stay out of any of the Five Eyes countries and any of their allies. If you're looking for free speech, do the same thing while also eliminating most of Europe.

Your best bet is some random fucking island or country that has like 10,000 people in it.

I've wondered this at many points

NateThomas1979

Last announcement was only 25 days ago. I doubt that a canary post will happen in any duration less than a month.

Ciscogeek

Alright, thanks. Good to hear. I was not exactly sure on the interval.

NateThomas1979

I don't know what it is either, but I can't believe it's less than 30 days in between.
