The thing that gives it away for me is the gun not performing realistically, that's a g19 he bought (he actually bought 2 for some reason, maybe to build a faker clone? fire prop gun in commotion switch to real gun and shoot bystander), if you look up the hicock45 review of the same gun you'll see all manner of ammunition fired from the same gun with almost 0 flash but 2/3 visible shots in the phone video have massive fireballs and the slide doesn't move nor do we see casings eject nor do we hear casings rattling on the wood floor in the studio video.

As to the media going quiet on this, we have to hypothesis with what we know and what we might know. if the motive was guncontrol that's weak as shit, but if this is a series of events that can be listed to show the horrors of guns and the results of a heavily armed racially motivated populace you have something, I think the designers got greedy they want to foment a race-war because that's about the only thing worse than murdering schoolchildren but they also wanted to bite at the idea that our current laws could protect us and so they had him pass a background check and be a gay black obamma supporter, what they didn't guess would happen is that it would go over the heads of the public and pundits and it would just be a victory for the NRA and it's call to better mental health infrastructure and other reasonable shit.
