Figured it's time for me to have an account here.

Hi.

Id like to welcome the new flock coming in to to our subverse.

Suggestions: Keep me coming and flowing.

I'd like it to stand out from the rest.

I'd say we already do. :)

Okay, I'm here.

Yes, I think this will do nicely. I see some names I trust.

I'm a Linux guy with 25+ years under my belt...but I cannot code HTML/XML/AJAX/JAVA worth a shit...unless I'm working with, say, Hadoop and am using JDK/JRE.

If my help is needed or any questions need answering bring them on! Happy to do what I can.

My only suggestion is to revamp the Inbox so you can both delete comments and, when you respond to them, you can see what you are writing while the comment is on-screen AND see the reply when you go back to the Inbox (until you choose to delete it).

I love this site!

I think maybe you are the one I need to seed with this idea. I am not requesting credit of any kind.

I had a showerthought the other day: What if the best way to help spread -nix adoption is to create a distro that's structured like a modern MMO?

While installing from a liveCD, you get a tutorial build that tasks you through the basics. After the install is complete, there's maybe 25 (or more) 'quests' that task the user with performing what would be considered ground level, necessary tasks for Linux operation/optimization/customization/maintence. Completion of the tasks allows points for use on the distros website (to 'purchase' wallpapers, branded tchotchke apps, themes, ect. - remember the target audience here) and 'achievements' that allow for easy access to share to FaceBook, Twitter, ect.

Further, allow the community to crowd source 'quests', affording them a space to share those quests on FB or a personal space on the distro's domain (that can also house all achievements and current quests completed to date, as well as those to be completed), meaning the learning via instant gratification can continue in perpetuity. Perhaps the quest creators can get a cut of the points earned for every person that creates their quest, building incentive to make them accessible but challenging...

Sorry for the rant, been waiting to find someone to discuss this with... perhaps I should have made this a PM, but I'm new to Voat, not entirely sure how to yet.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you; was in India overseeing production of a new sat receiver.

GREAT IDEA!! I am really excited about your imagination on this. I will write more very soon but just wanted to let you know that you are thinking in the right direction!

And if you keep it opensource you DESERVE and will GET credit!!! Why not??

Trust me, you couple this with Ubuntu or Arch and you will have a WINNER on your hands.

In the meantime check out Linux Format magazine and Kickstart. If you need any explanation of what the fuck they're saying DO NOT hesitate to write me.

xanaxinator

I love the idea!!!

I'd try a vanilla install of Ubuntu and write down what you'd add or change.

Then, I can change the Kickstart script to build the machine out in an MMO-like fashion.

This is a GREAT idea. Make sure to PM me. I'm starting a new job next week but would REALLY LIKE to talk to you about this more.

EXCELLENT IDEA!!!

ronintetsuro

I'm gonna look into this over the weekend. Glad you like the idea!

HTML is easy once you realize that you're basically just making a really verbose Word document and not actually "programming".

The programming comes in the JS/Java that runs beneath the HTML, and that's where the fun stuff is.

axolotl__peyotl

yay linux!

It's the bestest thing ever in the whole world, hehe!

I'm an Ubuntu SME by trade, but am certed in RHEL5 and will be in 7 very soon.

I'd like to apply as a moderator for /v/Conspiracy .

I've been following conspiracy theories for years as a hobby and amateur "historian". From ancient conspiracies to current issues, from the wildest theories to proven facts.

I have no cause I burn for. I have no previous affiliations with any subreddits or mod-cliques on that other site. Being from a small nation in northern Europe, I don't lean towards anything in US politics that can influence me as a mod. Beyond the gaming service Steam I have no internet friends, which probably makes me as neutral as it gets.

As a mod I'd use my influence to keep the discussion open ended, as I consider nothing to be too "wild" to be discussed or entertained by. I'd also advocate for discussion of provocative themes such as holocost denial (which I don't subscribe to) as long as it's done in a civil manner.

In that respect I'd like to moderate from the idea that the more individually sensitive a subject may be, the less tolerance for bullshit the mods should have. That way anything can be discussed if the people are courteous and the mods vigilant.

Regarding censorship: I will never censor anything that doesn't directly break the pre-agreed rules.

If the rules are ambigous, for the sake of fairness I'd want to specify the rules in the open rather than do a case-by-case evaluation that can lead to selecting rather than moderating posts.

Regards,

Jansen

Let's be careful with who we add as mods until atko is able to add mod logs; right now if we add someone who decides to start removing posts we would have no way to track their actions.
