This was brought up back a while ago, sometimes between 2004 and 2009 (probably around 2008).

I know, right?! Feel the same way.

I recently saw a discussion about how the Internet archives and old TV guides show it as BerenSTEIN.

Very odd indeed.

ciano

It was always 'stain. I remember from my childhood. And while it would be cool if the universe was somehow being rearranged, the reality of this situation is far more simple. Popele can raed jbumeld wrods if the fsrit and lsat few lteetrs are rhgit. It's a shortcut our brains use to make us read faster. Our parents read Berenstain, and the aforementioned mental shortcut caused them to process it as Berenstein, a much more familiar sounding name, and an easy one to assume. We, in turn, had the same oversight. I know this because when my mom read me the books, I always thought Berenstain was a funny sounding name, and it seems like Berenstein would make more sense.

Kubrick_Stare

You're wrong and that's a baseless claim to explain away this obvious name change. Google search 'Berenstein Bears' and you'll find many examples of how these books used to be spelled until the recent change. It was never spelled 'Berenstain,' It was always spelled 'Berenstein'

EDIT: Why the downvote? If people don't believe me then go look it up. It was never BerenSTAIN, it is BerenSTEIN and it always has been. This spelling change is very recent. If you believe ciano's dismissive explanation without researching the history of the Berenstein Bears, then go right ahead.

What if it was always Berenstain in this timestream, and I was born in this timestream and you're just a new arrival?

Kubrick_Stare

Regardless of what you believe or claim, it's Berenstein, not Berenstain.

BadDog

nope i get your memories are not the same but for many of us Berensteins is a reality and far from the only thing that's changed.

Exactly. There are hundreds, possibly thousands of people who remember it being "stein" (myself and my family and friends included). Only one of my friends remembered it "stain" but he hadn't seen the books until later in life, where I had them as a child.

Klockwork

Checking in from the 'stein' universe.
