Nat Geo: "Dear readers, DO NOT QUESTION YOUR GOVERNMENT GOD!"

The sad part is that I know people who eat this shit up in real life, and they are equally insufferable.

Thing is, it's SOP for new information to change how we think about science. If scientists and academics got it right all the time, we wouldn't have had the Thalidomide scandal, the Satanic Panic, BSE, Radon gas infused drinks, cancer causing virus-riddled Polio vaccines, HIV infected blood transfusions, cancer-riddled watch-dial painters... and that's just a random selection of things I could think of from memory.

We must always question science. That's called "scientific method". Anything else is dogma, which is when science becomes a religion.

Oh Nat Geo, how little you've fallen.

Regarding the moon landing, it's surprising that they're just addressing the idea of faking the moon landing, while it's a fringe part of the common belief that it's the filming of the moon landing that was faked, not the landing itself (particularly in Kubrick's the Shining )

What's important about this is how an establishment icon like National Geographic is taking a clear position. This instructs those who still believe in such institutions as to what the party line is and how to approach it. If your identity has a dependence on not being contradicted by NatGeo because you feel it is an authority voice then you will be inclined to disregard those pesky doubts that may have emerged recently on those topics.

More important is that these institutional voices are completely undermined. Information wants to be free and there was a time when National Geographic was a good source of information - one of the few available to the mass audience in a convenient way. As that is no longer the case their viewpoint is no longer of importance. Whatever they say in the article it can be tested and questioned extensively with a very low effort. Once you do so and find contradictory yet credible information NatGeo ceases to be viewed as a credible outlet.

In short, they are destroying their brand.
