Money is the root of all evil, of course. But, the idea of "money" also solves a problem. A physical dollar is just worthless paper. But the idea of a dollar allows for global electronic commerce.

You couldn't have stores like Amazon with just barter. There needs to be some sort of generic agreed-upon store of value (fungible assets). You may be an excellent painter but, what if Amazon doesn't want paintings? They want something that takes up minimal space, can be sent electronically, and holds a constant value.

The idea in the video is great for a small village or group of people who all know each other. I like gardening and you like making beer -- we can trade with each other. But, this model doesn't scale up beyond a few hundred people. Cities of millions of people would not be able to function on a barter system alone.

Most cultures tend to revert back to precious stones and metals to store value if there is no fiat currency. Fungibility is an important aspect of the idea of money.
