The X-Files was the result of a generation growing up in the shadow of Vietnam. That generation grew up in constant doubt of their own government. The US and Hollywood have spend a lot of time since then convincing people to love the country again. The years since 9/11 have been the worst. There is no room for descent.

Remember the spin off to the X-Files, The Lone Gunman; the very first episode starts out with almost an exact 9/11 scenario: entities within the government plan to crash a plane in the middle of New York City and blame it on terrorists.

Same here, rewatching the X-Files and watched this episode last night.

That's probably why they're trying to stir up cold war 2.0 now again with Russia. Along with ISIS... The probably know the economy is in for a rough ride and need something to prop it up.
