I don't know if you were around at the beginning of Facebook because when I think back it was a scam from the get go.

I was at one of the first dozen colleges who facebook was made available to. The community back then was just your friends at college and maybe a few others at local schools.

It stayed that way for a few years, when you had to register with your .edu email address. The composition of the community was much different. It was all about partying, hooking up, and networking. This was the heyday of Facebook. We felt secure with the medium because it was small, and we were only connected to our mates at college. Then they pulled a Myspace, let on the whole world, and it has become what it is today.

Without first introducing facebook to the college community it would have never gain the popularity it has today. When I look at those who use facebook the most, it is still that generation, who was at school when it was first introduced.

My take is, follow the money. Who funded these sites. We know that the CIA was heavily funding Facebook so that says a lot.
