The first thing anyone would notice about We is the fact--never pointed out, I believe--that Aldous Huxley's Brave New World must be partly derived from it.

Orwell, a few years before publishing 1984.

I was thinking about finishing up with The Anarchists Cookbook and seeing how long until I disappear.

But I have nothing to hide! Yes, that's right! Good lad. Now go back to hating the Kardashians.

they are in there, do not worry

I just started reading that one too!

When we read the book in our English class, I argued with the teacher that the world in 1984 would be impossible in the real world because people would wake up and notice how bad things had gotten and cease to tolerate it.

Now that I'm an adult, I see that most people tolerate a lot more things than I do. People are really afraid to seek the truth because of the social consequences, and that was something I never anticipated as a highschooler.

While a phenomenal book, it's not nearly as prescient as Fahrenheit 451.

this book turns from fiction to manual book

And im little bit disappointed with the ending

1984 was much harder for me to read, because of the sheer honesty it carries. The feeling of dread just build and builds until the very last page. Brave new world is kind of the inverse, where the scariness is in the subtext of the story, between the lines. The implications behind how they arrived in their position, is more terrifying than anything 1984 had to offer, but (if you're like me) you likely wont really notice the major implications until after you finish the story.

I highly recommend both these books. I also think both authors are eerily accurate in their predictions.

I decided to read 1984 a few years ago, I couldn't finish it, because it was upsetting how it was so much like our world's current state, the doublespeak (destruction of the English language), constant fear mongering, children terrorizing adults because they are untouchable.

I guess when the book was written, it was supposed to be about a dystopian future, now it's so near, too close to becoming our reality.

PardiGras

It's much more entertaining. And I would say more prophetic. Orwell predicted people too broken to resist totalitarianism, Huxley predicted people too dumb and preoccupied to even care to try.

magnora

I see 1984 as a tale of someone on the edge of the system, and Brave New World as a tale of someone living through and in the middle of the system. That's why one is so angry and bitter, and the other one is floaty and dreamy. It's like the lower class vs the upper class.

For those that have read the books (or just want them summed up), Here is a fun little info-graphic comparing the overreaching predictions of huxley and orwell.

I like that when my grandchildren asked me when did things go wrong I'll be able to point to a singular document as the final straw. It will make things easier. Not that they'd be able to find records of that document, let alone a copy of the document itself, or even mention of that document once the Ministry of Truth scoured it from history, but at least I'll have a ready answer.

We're heading towards something worse than 1984.

The TPP is another nail in the coffin for us all. The Patriot Act, which was passed at the turn of the new millennium, was the first. There are several more to come over the next few decades as the major governments will try to consolidate all governments under a single roof. They are achieving this through baby steps, but it's all evident when you read the news.

You may label this as conspiracy and shelf it up high to collect dust, however, you'll quickly realize this is where our world is heading to over the next 5-8 decades. I foresee more countries joining the European Union from illegally instigated conflicts, over the top fear mongering and systematic economic shutdown of countries. The U.S., once done in the middle-east, will turn their attention on Canada and Mexico even more so to consolidate the American continents into an American Union (1775). Once achieved, the European Union and the American Union will eventually combine. However, this is not going to happen within this century as the scope of it all is just too high and people need to be gradually eased to accept this. And if the people can't accept it, an artificial conflict will be created to make this happen. We've seen plenty of those in the past (1933, 2001).

History repeats constantly, over and over again. It's just most people see the signs far too late to do anything about it.

Believe what you want to, it's fabrication these days.

After your done with that read A Brave New World

It's scary how thought out this book is. Orwell was a smart man.

HP48GX

It is good that you decided to read it.

NikoMyshkin

there are patterns of exploitation that have been repeating themselves since the very start of our species. Orwell's genius was in identifying and expressing them in an absolutely cogent manner. If 1984 doesn't leave you numb with fear then you don't deserve freedom.

HP48GX

NikoMyshkin

thanks for this. this is so spot on. language controls thought.

The only issue I have is some people who read it are waiting for that exact scenario before they get worried. In the real world elites have learned to be much more subtle about their control. In 1984 the people are broken, and do exactly as they are told. In our world, the people are manipulated through psychological methods to say, act and even vote how the elites want all while leaving the illusion of self determination.
