Tibet under Lama was an oppressive feudal society where his priest class has brutally ruled over many slaves, what else do you need to "smear" him?

That's too close to home for China. Obviously, they would bring that up as it would be the most damaging evidence...but they don't, because if they did, people would have a new premise to call them out on.

Dorje Shugden was booted from the Buddhist Club a long time ago.

According to their detractors, they're basically the Buddhist version of Satanists.

I know two New Kadampa practitioners and they're lovely people, as are the monks that I've met from this tradition, but the resentment they have towards the Dalai Lama would be easy to manipulate by the Chinese government.
