Anything taken in too big of a dose can be deadly. The CDC says the dose of formaldehyde in vaccines is in trace amounts, though to be fair they don't define what they mean by "trace amounts" very clearly. On the other hand, the amount of formaldehyde in Lumber Liquidators' laminate was 1300% over healthy levels.

Trace amounts injected directly into the bloodstream, where they bypass all your bodies primary filtration system the gut and intestines, is just a trace amount different than skin contact with even high amounts.

If you broke a mercury filled thermometer and rolled it around in your hands it wouldn't be good for you, but it wouldn't immediately kill you, if you sucked it into a syringe and injected yourself however...
