It's easy to figure out why people involved in deals like that would be interested in almost anything that would limit the internet.

(Copied from a comment I made in /v/politics )

I can't shake the feeling there's a tragedy in the making and Genghis Khan will seem like a minor player afterward.

I get the concept that there are too many of us here on Earth; but other than the love of doing harm, I can't see why the TPP authors would not wait us out. I've heard different figures for what they think is a 'sustainable population' from 2 billion down to 500 million people, which doesn't take long to say but there's a world of pain between what we have and what they want. Whoever "they" are.

On the other hand, it's clear enough we can't keep on as we are. Never mind climate change: Fukushima, overfishing, designer diseases and DNA warping, there's all kinds of skullduggery going on out there while we screw around blowing up sand dunes. I haven't the faintest idea what the solution is, but somebody does and I know I won't like it.

What isn't clear is why the soldiers would be willing to do this harm. Surely there are people behind those shields; they have families. But no empathy at all? Anyone want to talk about this?

There are multiple reasons for this. 1. They aren't shown the perspective you are. They are told these people are "terrorists" and the "enemies" of America. 2. They have been so conditioned it is hard to disobey orders. When I was in, there were a lot of stupid rules and whatnot that I didn't agree with. Even though I wanted to speak out against them, I felt a fear or something that prevented me from confronting them directly. Instead, I would just bitch about it with everyone else. 3. They just don't care, and yes, there are people like that in the world. There was a video, I'll try and find it later with someone from the Bureau of Land Management boasting about how they took some old veteran's land.

Thanks for speaking. Regarding #3, there are a couple of mentions out there speaking about the Oregon standoff, suggesting that the real reason for damaging the life and assets of that farming family is that there is a uranium mine in the future for that land; possibly controlled by Russia, as US debt needs collateral that makes it ever harder to keep control of Federal lands. Have you seen this, and what do you think---

Thank you for looking this up. We've kind of wandered away from OP's post a bit, but I think it's relevant to the whole discussion.

Don't know how to start reinventing the world...

The only way is to rouse the masses who simply either don't care or are too afraid to act. Most people would rather put up with abuses and have their rights slowly taken away than to stand up for them. But who can blame them when they subconsciously know the daunting size of their enemy? They just want to live their lives.

"...and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."

No but please do tell more. That's very int---
