But why should anyone worry about getting a dishonourable discharge from the military wing of a morally corrupt government? Is it just mind control? Is it a fear of something else...no money in the future perhaps? It certainly can't be about a simple loss of prestige.

This is one of the big problems with the current world - everyone knows what is morally right, but they believe the consequences of acting morally means they will lose their 'hard-earned' standing within the immoral hierarchy of whichever contrived ruling class system they are in.
