Funny how you can die for your country at age 18 but you can't smoke something that would talk you out of dying for your country until 25.

Mylon

Arguably, 21 year olds are more damaged by the sudden binge drinking than 8 year olds exposed to the gradual exposure to beer and wine.

Greasetrap

Highly argueable. While bing drinking might kill someone, it's really more of a reaction to ingested poison. It isn't a constant manipulative effect on neutral development.

That's just what I think about it though, plenty of room to argue.

Mylon

Of course it deserves proper study, but other countries seem to manage fine. Yet here in America that magic date that allows a person to consume alcohol means they don't have a chance to learn responsible before then.

Negan

I got you, brain development continues well into your twenties (more than enough studies show this), and in the U.S. those with a medical marijuana card can get weed with as high THC as they want. While 25 seems arbitrary, it makes some sense. People just want to smoke their weed though, and anything preventing them from doing so is going to annoy them.

escapefromredditbay

its, progress?

edit: nope, its more of a revision deal, a really short sighted one. twenty bucks says doctors wont hesitate to get their patients help on the side, though.

creep

This is for MEDICAL purposes. Medical marijuana has low THC. It doesn't exist to get high, and there are children suffering with diseases that are only treated with medical marijuana. These laws will, as usual, only hurt the sick.

Greasetrap

Its insane to just say '25' with no support behind the number. Unless this is based on research it has no real basis, and it is just moralistic posturing.

That being said it may also be a 'safe' number to set, as it is rare/unheard of for people to still be developing past that age. There are good reasons we don't let children drink ethyl alcohol, and it isn't puritanism.

Mylon

More bullshit puritanism. They realize they can't stop the tide so they're trying to put up a dyke to keep it from going too far. Just like alcohol with 21 year olds, this shit needs to stop. Let adults decide what they want to do. Creating these artificial barriers is going to create a culture where people binge and make risky choices because "it's legal" or rabid enforcement looking to fine and punish underage users.
