What if your car is a one-off? Like the Scarabs that used to wedge a 460 in the Datsun 380s?

twentyfive

how does the epa feel about dumping waste in rivers?

RedditIsPropaganda23

EPA is corrupt as shit.

RedditIsPropaganda23

Exactly.

ObviouslyAHuman

You mean Google. In fact Google just calls your car home when its time for you to buy a new one.

Lobotomy

I think it's hilarious that people don't think this can happen.

VicariousJambi

So this law makes refurbishing old cars illegal? Like the ones that go for hundreds of thousands of dollars on car shows.

What the fuck?

Lobotomy

They're going to be museum pieces very soon.

Dortex1

I'm not seeing the conspiracy here. EPA has emission standards. Racing cars didn't have to follow them. Racing cars were street legal. Racing cars are still street legal, but they have to meet emission standards, which means you can't take off the things that make them meet said standards. This is pretty sound loophole closing.

VicariousJambi

What this is saying is that you can't take an old as hell car and refurbish it.

All of those expensive car shows just became illegal if any of those old engines from 1950 are fucked with.

Antiseed117

Example, I have a few upgrades in my car that provide better fuel mileage and better performance. Can you see why they wouldn't want you to have such options?

Amateur_Wizard

What about the bunker fuel burning shipping boats, or airplanes? What about clamping down on VW for being lying shit heads or increasing funding for clean diesel/ alternative fuels? Why don't they make the alternatives more attractive than the current?

But ALL of that doesn't matter anyways. Making car mods illegal is illegal under the TPP. Those companies could sue America for passing laws that hinder business.

Let the government try and flex their pathetic muscle... it's not going to do anything.

Voopin__Voopin

if the bullshit TPP traps them between a rock and a hard place should this bullshit pass, that would be SO beautiful.

pitenius

The conspiracy here is that the government wants the populace infantilized and corporations to achieve personhood.

Legislation like this is how you kill innovation. Killing (or restrictively scheduling) innovation is how you enforce a monopoly. Welcome to the shitacular, Stalinesque planned economy. Fuck this world.

VicariousJambi

Yeah, they're starting this shit early so they can "update" it for when self driving cars come out.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they wouldn't change it so I can't even put a different sound system in my car. They'd probably call it a fire hazard or some bullshit.

NZ_MPS

Err, really?

I don't think the small amount of modified cars is going to have an overall impact on climate change, I think it's just an easy target so that it looks like they're trying to do something about it.

leavethebag

Basically. It's easier to bully the people that to fight the power.

6double5321

I think you're missing the point. This could be used to force auto parts prices up. Especially is everything has to be "factory configuration." I'm a mechanic and the more I read about this, the madder I'm getting. It could fuck over any performance or custom exhaust shops if enforced. I need more sources on this crap.

NZ_MPS

I used to be a mechanic too, I've actually spent my entire working life in the automotive/motorcycle industry.

Believe me I know how bad this could be, I know i barely scratched the surface, it was just the first thing that came to mind.

It would be near impossible for every car to get genuine parts their entire life, it wouldn't be cost effective, not to mention how quickly parts get made obsolete by manufacturers.

Lobotomy

That's the point. There are plenty of documentaries on Netflix and YouTube about Planned Obsolescence. Book up.

NZ_MPS

I know about planned obsolescence, it started with light bulbs, I don't see why you think I don't?
