The need to have some sort of parental absolution for mistakes and reassurance that there is purpose is what drives religions, not deities.

Edit1: Origins of St Patrick's Day Most people don't realize that Christianity was spread through Europe by violence. When St Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland--which never had snakes--they were talking about the killing of Druids.

On v/conspiracy , you come across how Islam is trying to invade the West and how liberalism is trying to destroy our Christian heritage. But, Christianity was an invader at one time, too.

Most of us know that Christmas and Easter were pagan holidays usurped by Christians. Jesus was not born in December. He was born in late September or early October. But Christianity was more determined to squash pagan traditions than to celebrate the birth of Christ.

It bugs me that people attribute the virtues of European cultures to Christianity when I believe much our traditions and ethics had paeanistic roots.

No gods = no masters

If we had no gods we would replace it with nationalism and celebrity worship.

And for whatever reason, some people are desperate for someone to lead them.

Monsantos_Schlong

Id rather have no gods with the exception of worshipping the planet and treating our planet as the only and ultimate sacred being.

I think primitive man had more respect for nature when he believed that gods resided in forests and the animals and trees had souls.

crazy_eyes

The animals and the trees do have souls

yes. But the Abrahamic religions seem to be able to galvanize more people to war than separate smaller religions.

How about no gods. It's time to abandon that old construct. We have the Hubble telescope looking out into the Cosmos and discovering things we could never imagine. The Webb telescope is going to be launched next year and it is going to discover even more. Let the magic happen.

No gods would be fine with me.

But I think some people will always cling to a belief in God. I just don't like institutions guiding peoples belief rather just local customs.
