I think he's gone full Bond villian. I don't know if it's to reduce the population to safe the planet, kill off the 'dead weight', trying to save humanity from humanity, give the planet a good cleansing (hey look, no more malaria), or a whole "the old world must die before we can rebuild."

I sincerely wouldn't put it past him. I haven't followed the whole story closely enough to know whether there's any merit to the theory - I've just seen that it exists. But I've believed pretty much from the beginning that Gates is profoundly mentally ill. Seriously. I think that Microsoft is the warped and destructive entity it is specifically because it grew in his image, and he's a warped and destructive entity.
